Overview
RCMP Major Crimes Services – ‘D’ Division
Specialized Investigations
Based within the ‘D’ Division Headquarters on Portage Avenue, the RCMP Major Crimes Services (MCS) is a specialized branch dedicated to investigating the most serious and complex criminal offences in Manitoba. This section encompasses units such as the Major Crimes Unit (MCU) and the Serious Crimes Unit (SCU), which are deployed to investigate homicides, suspicious deaths, and high-profile felony cases across the province’s RCMP jurisdiction. Unlike uniformed general duty officers who respond to 911 calls, MCS investigators work on long-term, resource-intensive files requiring advanced forensic and interviewing techniques.
- Homicide Investigation: The primary unit responsible for investigating murders and suspicious deaths in RCMP jurisdictions throughout Manitoba.
- Missing Persons: Works in conjunction with the Historical Case Unit to investigate long-term missing persons cases where foul play is suspected.
- Serious Assaults: Takes carriage of investigations involving attempted murder, aggravated assault, and other severe violent crimes.
Operational Scope
While located at the public 1091 Portage Avenue address, the Major Crimes Services area is a secure, restricted zone not open to the general public. Citizens wishing to provide tips regarding a major crime should contact their local police, Crime Stoppers, or the general RCMP inquiry line. This unit does not operate a front counter for reporting minor crimes. Investigators from this office frequently travel throughout the province to support rural detachments in major casework.
