Overview
Metrotown Community Policing Hub
The District 4 Southwest Community Police Station is a critical satellite detachment of the Burnaby RCMP, strategically located to serve the densely populated Metrotown and Central Park areas. This facility functions as a vital bridge between the police force and the community, operating on a philosophy of accessibility and proactive engagement. Unlike the main detachment, this station is designed to be a welcoming, low-barrier environment where residents, business owners, and visitors can access non-emergency police services without the need to travel to the central headquarters. The station plays a pivotal role in maintaining public safety in one of British Columbia’s busiest retail and residential corridors.
Community Engagement and Crime Prevention
The core mission of the Southwest Community Police Station is to foster a safe environment through education and partnership. The station houses the Community Response Team (CRT), a specialized unit that works directly with local stakeholders to address ongoing safety concerns such as property crime, homelessness, and street disorder. The office coordinates several volunteer-led initiatives that are essential to the RCMP’s operations:
- Block Watch: A neighbour-helping-neighbour program where residents watch out for each other’s homes and report suspicious activities.
- Business Watch: Tailored for the Metrotown commercial district, helping merchants prevent theft and fraud.
- Cell Watch: A volunteer program aimed at discouraging distracted driving through observation and education.
- Speed Watch: Volunteers monitor vehicle speeds in school zones and residential areas to raise awareness and encourage safe driving.
Services Available On-Site
Residents can access a variety of administrative and non-emergency services directly at this location. It is important to note that this office does not have holding cells and does not process prisoners. Services include:
- Police Information Checks (PIC): Processing of criminal record checks for employment and volunteer positions. Applicants must reside in Burnaby and bring two pieces of valid government ID.
- Non-Emergency Reporting: Intake of reports for crimes where there is no immediate danger and no suspect present, such as theft from auto, mischief, or fraud.
- Document Services: Assistance with police certificates and other administrative documentation required for travel or immigration.
- Public Inquiries: Front counter staff can answer questions regarding local bylaws, policing procedures, and victim services referrals.
Operational Hours and Limitations
The station is open to the public on weekdays but observes a strictly enforced closure for lunch from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. daily. It is closed on weekends and statutory holidays. Visitors requiring fingerprinting services or those reporting in-progress emergencies must contact the main detachment or call 9-1-1 immediately. Due to the high volume of foot traffic from the nearby Metropolis at Metrotown, appointments are recommended for complex administrative services.
