Overview
Bonsor Public Tennis and Pickleball Courts
Located in the heart of the vibrant Metrotown district, the Bonsor Public Tennis and Pickleball Courts are among the busiest and most centrally located outdoor recreational facilities in Burnaby. Situated adjacent to the Bonsor Recreation Complex and the sprawling Metropolis at Metrotown shopping centre, these courts serve a high-density urban community. The facility is easily accessible by public transit and is a hub for local racquet sport enthusiasts.
Priority Schedule and Shared Use
To manage the high demand between tennis and pickleball players, the City of Burnaby has implemented a specific priority use schedule for these shared courts. The facility consists of 2 tennis courts which have been overlaid with lines for 6 pickleball courts.
- Tennis Priority: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. to dusk.
- Pickleball Priority: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.; Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 5:00 p.m. to dusk.
- Open Play: On weekends (Saturday and Sunday) and during non-priority hours, the courts operate on a first-come, first-served basis. If the courts are empty during a priority time, anyone can play, but they must vacate the court if players of the priority sport arrive.
Accessibility and Environment
The courts are fully wheelchair accessible and are located just steps away from the recreation centre, which offers washrooms, changing facilities, and a café. Due to their central location, these courts do not have evening lighting and are open for use from dawn until dusk. Players are reminded to bring their own equipment, including portable nets for pickleball if the permanent ones are not set up.
