Overview
A Tribute to Community Service
The District 3 Southeast Community Police Office is uniquely named the Donald N. Brown Community Police Office, honouring a legendary figure in Burnaby’s policing history. Donald N. Brown was a dedicated officer who served with both the BC Provincial Police and the RCMP, and later became a Freeman of the City of Burnaby. This naming reflects the station’s deep-rooted commitment to the values he championed: integrity, community service, and approachability. Located near the Edmonds SkyTrain station and the busy Kingsway corridor, this office serves the diverse neighbourhoods of Southeast Burnaby, Edmonds, and Highgate.
Community-Based Policing Model
This satellite office operates on the principle that effective policing requires strong relationships with the public. It serves as a hub for the District 3 Community Response Team (CRT), which focuses on long-term problem solving rather than just responding to calls. The office is a focal point for several key initiatives:
- Crime Free Multi-Housing: Working with apartment managers and stratas in the Highgate area to improve safety through design and management practices.
- Anti-Graffiti Coordinator: A dedicated resource to track, report, and facilitate the removal of graffiti, helping to maintain the visual pride of the neighbourhood.
- Outreach to Newcomers: Given the high immigrant population in Southeast Burnaby, the office often serves as a first point of contact for new Canadians learning about the role of police in society.
- Volunteer Coordination: Managing citizen patrols that act as the ”eyes and ears” of the police in local parks and school grounds.
Front Counter Services
To reduce the burden on the main detachment, the Donald N. Brown office offers a full range of non-emergency front counter services. Residents can visit this location to:
- Report Crimes: File reports for historic crimes (occurred in the past) or property crimes where no suspect is present (e.g., bicycle theft, vandalism).
- Obtain Record Checks: Apply for and pick up Police Information Checks required for employment or volunteer work. Note that ”Vulnerable Sector” checks may require additional processing time.
- Recover Property: In some cases, small lost and found items turned in by the public can be claimed here.
- Safety Resources: Pick up brochures and materials on home security, fraud prevention, and senior safety.
Important Visitor Information
The office is situated on Arcola Way, a quieter street just off the main thoroughfares. It follows standard government business hours but closes strictly for lunch between 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. Visitors are advised that this is a administrative and community support office; it is not equipped to handle aggressive individuals or prisoners. For immediate emergencies, the public must always call 9-1-1. Valid government-issued photo identification is required for all service requests.
