Opened in 1966, it is located in Abbotsford and serves as a key component of the Pacific Region’s correctional infrastructure. The institution is designed to house adult male offenders and focuses on rehabilitation through various vocational, educational, and correctional programs aimed at safe reintegration into society.
Programs and Rehabilitation
The facility offers a structured environment where inmates participate in interventions tailored to their specific risks and needs. Key programs include:
- Vocational Training: Opportunities for inmates to learn trade skills to support employment upon release.
- Indigenous Programming: The Aboriginal Basic Healing Program and access to Elders to support the spiritual and cultural needs of Indigenous offenders.
- Living Units: Accommodation is provided in living units with a central security core, allowing for direct observation and management of the inmate population.
Visitation and Security
As a medium-security federal penitentiary, Matsqui Institution enforces strict security protocols to ensure the safety of staff, the public, and inmates. All visitors must be on an approved list and are required to schedule visits at least 24 hours in advance. Security screening, including the use of ion scanners and drug dogs, is mandatory for all entrants. Personal belongings are restricted, and visitors must present valid government-issued identification.
