Overview
Abbotsford City Hall
General Overview
Abbotsford City Hall serves as the administrative headquarters for the City of Abbotsford, the largest municipality in the Fraser Valley Regional District. Formed in 1995 through the amalgamation of the District of Abbotsford and the District of Matsqui, the city operates from this central facility located on South Fraser Way. The building houses the Mayor and Council chambers, where public meetings are held, as well as the primary administrative departments responsible for municipal operations. Residents visit City Hall to access a wide range of local government services, from paying property taxes and utility bills to applying for development permits and business licenses.
Payments and Taxes
One of the primary functions of the customer service centre at City Hall is the collection of municipal revenues. Property owners can pay their annual property taxes and utility bills (water, sewer, waste) in person. While credit cards are typically not accepted at the counter for tax payments (online only via third-party processors), the cashier accepts cash, cheques, and debit cards. The city also administers the Provincial Home Owner Grant program, although applications for this are now primarily routed through the provincial government’s online portal.
Permitting and Development
The Planning and Development Services department is a key hub for homeowners, developers, and business owners. This division manages the city’s growth by reviewing building permit applications, issuing plumbing and electrical permits, and ensuring compliance with the BC Building Code. The business licensing department also operates here, requiring all businesses operating within Abbotsford to obtain and renew their annual business license. Staff are available to provide guidance on zoning bylaws and land use applications.
Bylaws and Community Services
City Hall is the base for Bylaw Enforcement, which handles community standards issues ranging from noise complaints and unsightly premises to parking regulations and animal control. Residents can report infractions or inquire about specific municipal bylaws. The facility also serves as a central information point for other city services, including waste collection schedules, recycling programs, and engineering inquiries related to roads and drainage.
