Overview
Edmonton Assessment Review Board
The Edmonton Assessment Review Board (ARB) is an independent quasi-judicial tribunal located in the Churchill Building in downtown Edmonton. It is responsible for hearing and resolving complaints regarding property assessments and business improvement area taxes. The board operates independently from the City of Edmonton’s tax administration to ensure impartial hearings.
Functions and Services
Property owners who disagree with their tax assessment can file a formal complaint with the ARB. The board reviews evidence from both the property owner and the City Assessor before making a binding decision.
- Property Assessment Complaints: Adjudication of disputes concerning the estimated value of residential and non-residential property.
- Business Tax Appeals: Reviews of business improvement area tax assessments.
- Hearing Process: Conducting fair hearings where parties can present evidence and witnesses.
- Decision Retrieval: Providing written decisions on assessment complaints, which are accessible to the public.
Visiting the Board
The ARB office is located on the main floor of the Churchill Building. While many administrative tasks, such as filing complaints, can be done online, the office is open for inquiries during specific business hours. Note that the office closes for lunch daily. Security screening may be required upon entry to the hearing areas.
