Overview
Consumer Protection Services
The Consumer Investigations Unit (CIU) South is a division of Service Alberta dedicated to ensuring a fair marketplace for consumers and businesses. This government office is responsible for enforcing the Consumer Protection Act and the Residential Tenancies Act. Investigators here handle complex complaints regarding unfair trade practices, including issues with auctions, collection agencies, door-to-door sales, and landlord-tenant disputes.
Investigation Scope
- Business Compliance: Investigates breaches of provincial consumer laws by businesses, such as misleading advertising or failure to provide refunds.
- Tenancy Disputes: addresses serious violations of residential tenancy laws (though dispute resolution is handled separately).
- Fraud & Theft: Officers have authority under the Criminal Code to investigate fraud and theft related to consumer transactions.
Public Access
While the CIU operates from this location in the Centre 70 building on Macleod Trail, most consumer complaints should be initiated through the Consumer Contact Centre hotline or the online complaint portal. The physical office primarily serves as an administrative hub for investigators covering Southern Alberta. Residents are advised to call toll-free before visiting.
