Overview
14 Military Police Platoon
The 14 Military Police Platoon is a specialized law enforcement unit of the Canadian Forces Military Police Group, stationed at the General Sir Arthur Currie Building in Southwest Calgary. As a component of the Canadian Army’s reserve force, this unit supports the Department of National Defence (DND) by providing policing, security, and detention services within military jurisdiction.
Role and Jurisdiction
Unlike municipal police services, the Military Police (MP) possess a unique mandate to enforce the National Defence Act and the Code of Service Discipline. While they have authority over military personnel and on defence establishments, they often work in cooperation with the Calgary Police Service for matters involving civilians or off-base incidents.
- Military Law Enforcement: Investigating service offences and criminal activities involving Canadian Armed Forces members.
- Security Operations: Ensuring the physical security of DND infrastructure, including the former CFB Calgary lands.
- Operational Support: assisting Regular Force units with specialized police tasks during domestic and international deployments.
- Community Policing: Engaging with the local military community and their families to promote safety and crime prevention.
Access and Visits
The unit is located within a controlled military facility. Public access is restricted, and visitors may be subject to security screening. It is important to note that for general civil emergencies in Calgary, citizens should contact 9-1-1 or the Calgary Police Service. The 14 MP Platoon primarily handles non-emergency administrative matters and inquiries related to military service.
