Profile
Access to Justice for All Calgarians
Calgary Legal Guidance (CLG) is a beacon of hope for those who cannot afford traditional legal services. Established in 1972, this charitable organization operates on the fundamental belief that financial barriers should never prevent someone from accessing justice. Through a robust network of volunteer lawyers and dedicated staff, CLG provides free legal advice and representation to thousands of vulnerable Albertans every year. It is not just a law office; it is a lifeline for low-income individuals facing life-altering legal challenges.
Critical Support Programs
CLG offers a wide array of specialized programs designed to support the most marginalized members of the community. Their services include:
- Domestic Violence Family Law: providing urgent legal support to victims of domestic violence to ensure their safety and rights are protected.
- Homeless Outreach: connecting directly with individuals at shelters and community centers to resolve legal issues that contribute to homelessness.
- Elder Law: assisting seniors with wills, powers of attorney, and issues related to elder abuse.
- Immigration Law: helping newcomers navigate the complexities of the Canadian immigration system.
- Indigenous Law: offering culturally sensitive legal support through the Sahwoo mohkaak tsi ma taas program.
Powered by Volunteers
With hundreds of volunteer lawyers donating their time, Calgary Legal Guidance acts as a bridge between the legal profession and the public. While they do not function like a private firm where you can hire a lawyer for any matter, they are the first stop for anyone who needs to find a lawyer but lacks the means to pay. Their "Dial-A-Law" service and public legal education workshops also empower citizens with knowledge.
Located in the Hatch Building downtown, CLG is a testament to the generosity and spirit of Calgary’s legal community. If you are in need of help and don’t know where to turn, Calgary Legal Guidance is there to listen.
