Overview
CPS Arrest Processing Section
The CPS Arrest Processing Section (APS) is housed within the Spyhill Services Centre in Northwest Calgary. This specialized facility serves as the central intake and processing hub for individuals detained by the Calgary Police Service. Replacing the former downtown courts holding unit, the Spyhill facility was designed to meet modern standards of safety, security, and humane treatment of detainees.
Facility Functions
The Arrest Processing Section operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, ensuring the continuous management of the intake process. It is not a public precinct for general police inquiries or reporting crimes.
- Detainee Intake: Processing of individuals arrested in Calgary prior to their release or transfer.
- Bail Hearings: Facilitating judicial interim release hearings via video link or onsite processes.
- Identity Verification: Secure fingerprinting and photographing of persons in custody.
- Custodial Care: Providing short-term holding cells with strict adherence to safety protocols.
Security and Access
As a high-security facility, public access is strictly controlled. There is no general front counter service for the public at this location. Family members or legal counsel seeking information regarding a detainee should contact the main CPS non-emergency line or the facility directly, though privacy laws limit the release of information. Visits are generally not permitted for the general public.
Location Context
Located in the Spyhill area, this facility is situated near other correctional institutions. Its remote location minimizes traffic congestion and enhances security. Access to public transit is limited in this specific industrial zone, so personal transport or taxi services are typically required for those released from the facility.
