Youth Correctional Facility
The Calgary Young Offender Centre (CYOC) is a specialized correctional facility for youth aged 12 to 17. Managed by the Alberta Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services, it serves as the primary detention centre for young persons in Southern Alberta. The facility accommodates youth with open custody, secure custody, and remand status, providing a secure environment focused on rehabilitation and reintegration.
Programs and Rehabilitation
- Education: Mandatory school attendance is required for all youth, with on-site educational programs delivered in partnership with local school boards.
- Life Skills: Programming includes anger management, addictions treatment, mental health support, and indigenous cultural programs.
- Reintegration: Case workers develop individualized plans to help youth successfully transition back into their communities upon release.
Visitation and Security
Strict security protocols are in place. All visits must be scheduled in advance, and visitors are subject to security screening and metal detection. Personal items, including cell phones and bags, are prohibited inside the secure zone. The centre emphasizes a safe environment for both staff and residents.
