Overview
Calgary Remand Centre
The Calgary Remand Centre (CRC) is a state-of-the-art provincial correctional facility located in northwest Calgary, Alberta. Opened in 1993 to replace the older downtown facility, it serves as the primary holding centre for adult male and female accused individuals awaiting trial or sentencing in the Southern Alberta region. As a maximum-security facility, it is designed to manage a high-volume intake of detainees and ensure secure custody during the judicial process.
Facility Functions
- Pre-Trial Custody: Holds individuals who have been denied bail or have not yet had a bail hearing.
- Security Level: Operates as a maximum-security institution due to the varied nature of the inmate population.
- Inmate Services: Provides access to legal counsel, healthcare, and addiction support services while in custody.
- Video Courts: Equipped with extensive video conferencing technology to facilitate court appearances without transport.
Visitation and Policies
Due to security requirements, the CRC primarily utilizes video visitation for family and friends. In-person visits are rare and subject to strict non-contact policies behind glass barriers. All visitors must be on an approved list and present valid government-issued identification. The facility enforces a zero-tolerance policy for contraband.
Location and Access
Situated adjacent to the Calgary Correctional Centre (Spyhill), the Remand Centre is a distinct entity with its own administration. It handles the processing of thousands of admissions annually, playing a pivotal role in the administration of justice in Calgary and surrounding areas.
