Profile
Access to Justice for the Community
The Kingston Community Legal Clinic (KCLC) is a non-profit legal clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario, serving low-income residents of Kingston and the surrounding Frontenac County. The clinic is dedicated to removing barriers to justice and providing essential legal services to those who might otherwise be unable to afford a lawyer. Staffed by a team of lawyers, community legal workers, and support staff, the clinic focuses on areas of law that most directly affect the basic needs of individuals and families. If you are facing a legal crisis related to your housing or income, this clinic offers a vital lifeline and expert advocacy.
Housing and Tenant Rights
A primary focus of the clinic is housing law. KCLC provides advice and representation to tenants facing eviction, maintenance issues, or harassment from landlords. They do not represent landlords. The clinic helps tenants understand their rights under the Residential Tenancies Act and represents them before the Landlord and Tenant Board. Their goal is to prevent homelessness and ensure that all residents have access to safe and secure housing. They also offer Tenant Duty Counsel services for those appearing at the Board without prior legal representation.
Income Security and Social Benefits
The clinic assists individuals who are having difficulties with government income support programs. This includes appeals and advocacy regarding Ontario Works (OW), the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP), and Canada Pension Plan Disability (CPP-D) benefits. The legal team helps clients navigate the complex bureaucratic systems to secure the financial support they are entitled to. They represent clients at the Social Benefits Tribunal, fighting for fair treatment and the reinstatement of denied or cancelled benefits.
Employment and Human Rights
Beyond housing and income, the Kingston Community Legal Clinic handles matters related to employment law and human rights. They assist workers who have been wrongfully dismissed or denied their rights under the Employment Standards Act. The clinic also advises on human rights violations, particularly discrimination in housing or services. Through public legal education and community development initiatives, KCLC works to empower the community and advocate for systemic changes that benefit vulnerable populations.
