Pro Bono Legal Services at Queen’s Business Law Clinic
The Queen’s Business Law Clinic (QBLC) is a unique legal resource in the Kingston community, providing vital support to those who might otherwise be unable to afford legal counsel. Operated by the prestigious Queen’s University Faculty of Law, the clinic allows law students to gain practical experience while serving the public under the strict supervision of experienced review counsel. Located in downtown Kingston at 303 Bagot St, the QBLC is the place to go if you need to find a lawyer for your small business or non-profit organization but face financial barriers. We are dedicated to fostering entrepreneurship and community development through accessible legal services.
Support for Startups and Small Businesses
Starting a business is an exciting journey, but the legal requirements can be daunting. The QBLC helps entrepreneurs turn their vision into reality by handling the foundational legal work. If you qualify for our services, our student caseworkers can assist with:
- Business Formation: We help you choose the right structure and file articles of incorporation to legally establish your business.
- Contract Drafting: Protecting your business relationships is crucial. We draft and review shareholder agreements, partnership agreements, and service contracts.
- Intellectual Property: We provide guidance on protecting your brand and ideas, including trademark and copyright inquiries.
If you are looking to hire a legal team to help launch your venture without the high cost of a private firm, the QBLC is an excellent option for eligible clients.
Non-Profit and Charitable Organizations
Charities and non-profits play a vital role in our society, and we are proud to support them. The QBLC offers specialized legal assistance to help these organizations navigate the complex regulatory landscape. Our services include:
- Incorporation and Organization: Helping community groups incorporate as non-profit entities.
- Governance Advice: Advising boards of directors on their legal duties and best practices for governance.
- Charitable Status: Assisting with the application process for charitable registration with the Canada Revenue Agency.
A Model of Experiential Learning
The QBLC is more than just a legal clinic; it is a training ground for the next generation of lawyers. By working with us, you are helping students develop essential skills in client interviewing, legal research, and drafting. Rest assured, all work is rigorously reviewed by qualified lawyers to ensure it meets professional standards. Our office in the LaSalle Mews building offers a professional and confidential environment for all client meetings.
Eligibility and Application
To access our services, clients must meet specific financial eligibility criteria. We prioritize individuals and organizations that cannot afford private legal fees. If you think you might qualify, we encourage you to schedule a consultation or apply online. The QBLC operates year-round, ensuring that the Kingston community has continuous access to justice.
