Profile
Culturally Appropriate Justice Services
The Kamloops Indigenous Justice Centre (IJC) is a vital legal resource located in downtown Kamloops on Victoria Street. Operated by the BC First Nations Justice Council (BCFNJC), the centre provides free, culturally safe legal services to Indigenous people-First Nations, Métis, and Inuit-dealing with criminal and child protection matters. The centre is part of a provincial network designed to address the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the justice system by offering holistic support that goes beyond traditional legal representation.
Criminal Defence
The IJC employs staff lawyers who act as dedicated Criminal Defence Lawyers for Indigenous clients. They handle a wide range of criminal charges, working to ensure that the unique circumstances of Indigenous accused, such as Gladue factors, are fully considered by the courts. Their goal is to divert individuals away from the criminal justice system whenever possible and towards restorative justice pathways.
Child Protection
Families involved with the Ministry of Children and Family Development receive robust advocacy. The centre’s lawyers specialize in child protection matters, fighting to keep Indigenous families together and ensuring that children remain connected to their culture and community. They provide representation in court and support parents through the often complex and intimidating child welfare system.
Wraparound Support
Beyond legal advice, the Kamloops IJC offers comprehensive wraparound services. Outreach workers and justice workers assist clients with housing, mental health, and addiction support, addressing the root causes of legal issues. They also facilitate connections to Elders and cultural supports, promoting healing and resilience within the community.
