Access to Justice for All in Kamloops
Okanagan Thompson Legal Clinic is a non-profit community legal clinic dedicated to providing free legal services to low-income individuals in the Kamloops and Okanagan regions. We believe that financial barriers should not prevent anyone from accessing justice. Our clinic operates with a trauma-informed approach, creating a safe and supportive environment for clients who are often dealing with crisis situations, poverty, or systemic discrimination. Staffed by dedicated lawyers and legal advocates, we provide advice, representation, and public legal education to empower our community members and help them navigate complex legal systems.
Our Free Legal Services
We focus on areas of law that most impact the daily lives and stability of our clients. Our services are generally available to those who meet financial eligibility guidelines:
- Housing & Tenancy: We assist tenants facing eviction, illegal rent increases, and poor housing conditions. We represent clients at the Residential Tenancy Branch to ensure their rights to safe and stable housing are protected.
- Income Assistance & Disability: Navigating government benefits can be overwhelming. We help clients apply for and appeal decisions regarding Income Assistance, Provincial Disability Benefits (PWD), and Canada Pension Plan Disability (CPP-D).
- Employment Law: We support workers who have been wrongfully dismissed, denied wages, or faced discrimination in the workplace. We assist with Employment Standards complaints and Human Rights claims.
- Family Law (Limited): While we do not handle all family matters, our advocates can assist with specific issues such as obtaining protection orders, simple separation agreements, and navigating the early stages of family court processes.
- Debt & Consumer Law: We provide guidance to those struggling with debt collectors and unfair consumer practices.
Community-Centered Advocacy
The Okanagan Thompson Legal Clinic is more than just a law office; we are a community resource. We work to identify systemic issues affecting marginalized groups and advocate for broader legal changes. Our team travels to smaller communities in the region to ensure that rural residents also have access to legal support. We are committed to removing barriers to justice for Indigenous peoples, women, gender-diverse individuals, and people with disabilities.
We provide client-centered, trauma-informed legal advice and representation. Our goal is to remove barriers to justice and ensure that everyone has a voice in the legal system.
