Overview
WRPS North Division
Operational Jurisdiction and Services
The Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) – North Division is situated at 45 Columbia Street East and serves as the primary law enforcement hub for the City of Waterloo and the rural townships of Woolwich and Wellesley. This division is strategically positioned to address the unique policing needs of a diverse area that includes a bustling technology sector, two major universities (University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University), and extensive Mennonite rural communities. The facility houses uniformed patrol officers, detectives, and administrative staff who work collaboratively to ensure public safety. While front-line policing operates 24/7, the division’s administrative front desk provides public services during specific business hours, such as receiving non-emergency reports and general inquiries.
Collision Reporting Centre
A key feature of the North Division facility is the on-site Collision Reporting Centre (CRC). This service is designated for reporting property-damage-only collisions where no injuries occurred and vehicles are still drivable. Drivers involved in minor accidents in Waterloo or the northern townships are directed here to complete the necessary provincial collision reports and have their vehicles photographed for insurance purposes. This diverts minor traffic incidents away from the roadside, improving traffic flow and officer availability. It is important to note that if a vehicle is not drivable, it must be towed to the Cambridge CRC; the North Division CRC typically handles drivable vehicles only during its specific operating hours.
Historical Significance and Community Role
The North Division station has been a cornerstone of the regional police model since the amalgamation of local police forces in 1973. Over the decades, it has adapted to the region’s rapid growth, particularly the intensification of the student population and the tech sector. The station serves as a base for specialized units, including the Community Engagement and Wellbeing Branch, which focuses on proactive policing and mental health partnerships. Officers from North Division are frequently involved in ‘Town and Gown’ initiatives, working alongside university special constables and city by-law officers to manage large street gatherings and ensure the safety of the student and residential populations. 🚓👮♂️🚔🇨🇦
