Overview
Municipal Operations and Public Works
Function and Role
The City of Waterloo Service Centre, located at 265 Lexington Court, functions as the operational headquarters for many of the city’s essential physical services. Unlike City Hall, which focuses on administration and governance, the Service Centre is the primary hub for public works, engineering services, and fleet management. It is designed to be a convenient “one-stop” location for residents requiring practical permits or tangible items related to property maintenance and city infrastructure.
In-Person Services
The facility offers a specific set of over-the-counter services distinct from those at City Hall.
- Permits and Licenses: Residents can apply and pay for parking permits (including overnight temporary parking) and park access permits.
- Municipal Goods: The counter sells garbage tags for excess waste, as well as water meters for new construction or replacement.
- Bill Payments: Similar to City Hall, the Service Centre accepts payments for property taxes and water utility bills.
- Note: This location does not issue marriage licenses or handle court services.
Operational Hours and Access
The Service Centre typically opens earlier than other municipal offices (at 7:00 a.m. or 7:30 a.m.) to accommodate contractors and early-morning public works schedules. The building is fully accessible, featuring wheelchair-friendly entrances and sensory backpacks for visitors who may require them. It is situated in the industrial/commercial zone near Lexington Road, separate from the uptown core.
Transportation
While the site offers free visitor parking, it is also accessible by public transit. The closest Grand River Transit (GRT) stops are located on Lexington Road, served by routes connecting to the university district and Conestoga Mall.
