Overview
Preserving Regional History
Location and Mandate
The Region of Waterloo Archives is the official repository for the historical records of the Regional Municipality of Waterloo and its predecessor, the County of Waterloo. 📜 Located on the first floor of the heritage-designated County of Waterloo Courthouse at 20 Weber Street East, this facility is dedicated to acquiring, preserving, and making available documents that chronicle the development of the region. The collection spans from 1829 to the present, housing essential government records including council minutes, by-laws, assessment rolls, and maps. It also holds the archives for the Township of Woolwich, the former Town of Elmira, and the Waterloo Regional Police Service, making it a comprehensive resource for local history.
Research and Access
The Archives serves a wide range of researchers, from genealogists tracing their family trees to academic scholars and municipal staff. The reading room is open to the public, but currently operates by appointment only to ensure that staff can adequately prepare the requested materials. 🕰️ Knowledgeable archivists are available to assist with complex inquiries, offering guidance on how to navigate the vast holdings. While there is no fee to view the documents, charges apply for reproduction services such as photocopying and high-resolution digital scans. Visitors are encouraged to contact the archives in advance via email or phone to discuss their research topics and schedule a visit.
Facility and Amenities
Situated within a significant administrative complex, the Archives is fully accessible to individuals with mobility challenges, featuring barrier-free entrances and accessible washrooms. The building is shared with other regional services, such as Ontario Works and Housing Services, making it a central hub for government interaction. 🏛️ Paid parking is available in the vicinity, including the underground lot beneath the nearby Kitchener Public Library and surface lots off Queen Street. The location is also well-served by Grand River Transit, with several bus routes stopping directly outside or within a short walking distance.
