Overview
Central Justice Hub for Waterloo Region
Integrated Court Services
- Consolidated Facility: Opened in 2013, this modern facility amalgamates the Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Justice under one roof. It replaced former courthouses in Kitchener and Cambridge, serving as the primary venue for all criminal, family, and civil litigation in the region.
- Criminal Law: The courthouse handles a vast array of criminal proceedings, from bail hearings and first appearances to complex jury trials for serious indictable offences. It features secure prisoner transport and holding facilities to ensure safety during proceedings.
- Family and Youth: Specialized courts address family law matters, including custody, support, and child protection cases. The facility also manages Youth Court proceedings, providing a separate and appropriate environment for young persons in conflict with the law.
Accessibility and Security
- Strict Screening: Visitors must pass through rigorous airport-style security upon entry, including metal detectors and bag checks. Prohibited items such as weapons, sharp objects, and cameras are confiscated. Cell phones are permitted but must be silenced in courtrooms.
- Barrier-Free Design: Designed to LEED Silver standards, the building is fully accessible, featuring barrier-free courtrooms, elevators, and witness stands, ensuring equitable access to justice for all citizens.
