Protecting Vulnerable Ontarians
Guardianship and Estate Services
- Substitute Decision Maker: The Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee (OPGT) acts as the decision-maker of last resort for mentally incapable adults who have no one else to make decisions on their behalf regarding their property, finances, or personal care. They ensure that the most vulnerable citizens are protected from financial abuse and neglect.
- Estate Administration: This office administers the estates of deceased persons when there is no will and no known next of kin available to apply for administration. They locate beneficiaries and distribute assets according to the Succession Law Reform Act.
- Charitable Property: The OPGT plays a role in protecting the public interest in charitable property, ensuring that funds raised for charitable purposes are used appropriately and reviewing applications for orders to access charitable funds.
Regional Operations
- Counter Hours: The Sudbury regional office has specific public access hours for receiving documents and inquiries. It serves the Northern Region, providing localized support for families and legal professionals navigating the Substitute Decisions Act.
