Overview
Fredericton Police Force (FPF)
The Fredericton Police Force is the municipal law enforcement agency serving the capital city of New Brunswick. With a history dating back to its establishment in 1851 (making it one of the oldest police forces in the country), the FPF is headquartered at 311 Queen Street in the downtown core. The force is dedicated to the philosophy of Community Based Policing, working in partnership with residents to solve crime and disorder problems. As of December 2025, the force’s jurisdiction has expanded significantly to cover newly annexed areas resulting from local governance reform, ensuring uniform public safety services across the greater Fredericton region.
Criminal Record Checks
The FPF has modernized its Criminal Record Check (CRC) process, moving primarily to an online system. This service is available 24/7 for residents of Fredericton who require a background check for employment, volunteering, or student placements.
- Online Process: Applicants can verify their identity using an Electronic Identity Verification (EIV) system based on their credit file. Results are often emailed within 15 business days if no fingerprints are required.
- Vulnerable Sector Check: Required for those working with children or vulnerable adults. If a ‘hit’ occurs based on date of birth, applicants may need to submit fingerprints.
- Fingerprinting: Digital fingerprinting services are available at the station by appointment (typically Tuesdays) for an additional fee 💳.
Victim and Witness Support
A standout division within the force is the Victim Witness Services unit. Staffed by professional social workers and a team of dedicated volunteers, this unit provides crisis intervention and emotional support to individuals affected by crime. They assist victims in navigating the complex criminal justice system, offering court preparation and accompaniment. This unit operates on a trauma-informed care model, ensuring that victims are treated with dignity and respect throughout the investigation and trial process.
Operations and Divisions
The force is organized into several key divisions:
- Patrol Division: The backbone of the force, operating 24/7/365 to respond to 911 calls. These officers are often the first on the scene of emergencies, domestic disputes, and traffic accidents.
- Criminal Investigations Division (CID): Detectives who handle serious crimes such as major assaults, fraud, and drug trafficking operations.
- Neighbourhood Action Teams (NAT): Specialized officers focused on specific geographic areas to address long-term community issues.
- Primary Response Team: Handling non-emergency calls to free up patrol officers for urgent matters.
Facility Access
The police station on Queen Street features a secure front lobby open to the public for inquiries. A direct line phone is available in the vestibule for after-hours contact. Visitors attending for fingerprinting or interviews must present valid government-issued photo identification. The facility is fully wheelchair accessible.
