Overview
Richmond Block Watch and City Centre CPO
The Richmond Block Watch program is centrally administered from the City Centre Community Police Office (CPO), located at 6931 Granville Avenue. This office serves as the headquarters for one of the most effective neighbourhood crime prevention initiatives in the city. The City Centre CPO acts as a hub for community safety, situated near the bustling No. 3 Road corridor and Richmond City Hall. While the office handles general community policing duties for the City Centre area, it is the primary contact point for residents wishing to start or manage a Block Watch group. The program encourages neighbours to watch out for one another, report suspicious activity, and maintain a direct line of communication with the police to reduce residential crime.
Office Services and Police Information Checks
Beyond the Block Watch program, the City Centre CPO provides a comprehensive range of front-counter services similar to the main detachment. Residents can visit this location to apply for and pick up Police Information Checks (Criminal Record Checks) for employment or volunteer purposes. The office accepts non-emergency reports for crimes such as theft from vehicles, fraud, and property damage. It serves as a convenient alternative to the main No. 5 Road detachment for those living or working in the downtown core. The staff, comprised of municipal employees and RCMP volunteers, are trained to assist with volunteer applications and provide guidance on police procedures and bylaws.
Community Engagement and Safety Programs
The office coordinates a variety of proactive safety strategies. In addition to Block Watch, it manages the Business Link program, helping local merchants prevent shoplifting and commercial burglary. Volunteers based here participate in Crime Watch patrols and community events to distribute safety information. The facility is equipped to handle inquiries regarding home security audits and offers resources to help residents “target harden” their properties against break-ins. The Block Watch coordinators at this location provide training for Block Captains and facilitate the sharing of crime trends and alerts with participating neighbourhoods.
