Overview
Lethbridge Youth Justice Committee
The Lethbridge Youth Justice Committee is a community-driven initiative operating under the authority of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. It provides an alternative to the formal court system for young offenders aged 12 to 17 who have committed non-violent offences. By focusing on restorative justice, the committee helps youth take responsibility for their actions while healing the harm caused to victims and the community.
Restorative Justice Process
Participation in the program is by referral from the Lethbridge Police Service or the Crown Prosecutor. The process brings together the young person, their guardians, victims, and volunteer committee members to discuss the offence and its impact.
- Extra-Judicial Sanctions: Developing binding agreements that may include restitution, community service, or letters of apology.
- Victim Engagement: Providing a safe environment for victims to share their experiences and receive closure.
- Youth Accountability: Encouraging young offenders to understand the consequences of their actions and make amends.
- Diversion: Helping eligible youth avoid a permanent criminal record by successfully completing the program.
Access and Visits
The committee operates out of downtown Lethbridge. Meetings are scheduled by appointment only following a formal referral. As this is a legal diversion program, strict adherence to scheduled times and conduct is required for all participants.
