Overview
Lethbridge Correctional Centre: Southern Alberta Custody
The Lethbridge Correctional Centre (LCC) is a multi-purpose provincial correctional facility located just east of the city limits on Highway 512. It serves as the primary detention centre for adult offenders in southern Alberta. The facility is unique in that it functions as both a remand centre for individuals awaiting trial or court appearances and a correctional centre for those serving sentences of up to two years less a day. Sentences of two years or more are served in federal penitentiaries. The centre houses both male and female inmates in separate units, managing a diverse population with varying security requirements.
Visitation and Communication
Maintaining family ties is recognized as an important part of rehabilitation, and LCC has structured protocols for visitation. All visits must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance, and visitors are strictly vetted. Upon arrival, guests must undergo security screening and present valid government-issued photo identification. The facility enforces a strict code of conduct and dress code to ensure safety and order. In addition to in-person visits (which may be behind glass depending on the security level), the centre facilitates professional visits for lawyers and utilizes video conferencing technology for court appearances to reduce transport risks.
Rehabilitation and Programs
The Lethbridge Correctional Centre partners with community organizations and educational institutions, such as Lethbridge Polytechnic, to offer rehabilitation programs. These initiatives are designed to address the root causes of criminal behaviour and prepare inmates for successful reintegration into society. Programs may include addiction awareness, anger management, family violence prevention, and employment skills training. Indigenous offenders have access to cultural programming and spiritual support, recognizing the importance of heritage in the healing process. The centre also provides health services, including mental health support, to the inmate population.
Operational Security
As a medium-to-maximum security facility, LCC operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with a primary focus on public safety. The perimeter is secured, and internal movement is tightly controlled. Inmates may be classified into different security levels based on their risk assessment, which dictates their housing and privileges. The centre also accepts funds for inmates’ trust accounts, allowing them to purchase approved hygiene items and snacks from the canteen. Money can be deposited via money order or cash during visits, subject to strict limits and accounting procedures.
