Overview
Provincial Correctional Facility
The Établissement de détention de Sherbrooke, commonly referred to as the Talbot Prison, is a provincial correctional centre managed by the Ministère de la Sécurité publique du Québec. Located on Rue Talbot, this facility replaced the historic Winter Prison in 1990 to provide modern and secure detention conditions. It primarily houses adult male offenders serving sentences of less than two years, as well as individuals awaiting trial (remand) or sentencing within the judicial district of Saint-François.
Operational Mandate
As a key component of the Estrie region’s justice system, the centre operates with a focus on both security and social reintegration. Its mandate includes:
- Custody and Control: Ensuring the secure confinement of inmates to protect the public, while maintaining a safe environment for staff and detainees.
- Rehabilitation Services: Providing programs aimed at addressing the root causes of criminal behavior, such as substance abuse counseling, anger management, and educational workshops.
- Judicial Support: Facilitating the transport of accused persons to the nearby Sherbrooke Courthouse for legal proceedings.
Visitation and Procedures
Access to the facility is strictly regulated. Families and friends wishing to visit an inmate must strictly adhere to the established visitation schedule and booking procedures. Visitors are subject to rigorous security screening, including metal detectors and searches. The centre also maintains specific hours for the deposit of money (cantine funds) and clothing for inmates. It is crucial for visitors to bring valid government identification and to dress appropriately, as strict dress codes are enforced to maintain order and decency within the institution.
