Overview
Municipal Law Enforcement and Public Safety
The Service de police de Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu is the primary law enforcement agency responsible for the safety and security of the city’s residents. Formed following the municipal amalgamation in 2001, the department officially integrated the police forces of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Iberville, and Saint-Luc into a unified command on January 1, 2002. Today, it stands as the 11th largest municipal police force in Quebec, covering a territory of over 225 square kilometres and serving a population exceeding 95,000 citizens. The headquarters on Rue MacDonald operates 24 hours a day, ensuring continuous response capabilities for emergencies.
Divisions and Specialized Operations
The department is structured into several key divisions to effectively manage public order. The Gendarmerie (Patrol Division) is the most visible arm, with officers responding to 911 calls, enforcing traffic laws, and conducting preventative patrols in designated sectors. The Criminal Investigations Division handles more complex cases, including crimes against persons and property, fraud, and drug enforcement. The force also maintains a specialized Prevention and Community Relations section, which works closely with schools, seniors, and community groups to implement safety programs and reduce crime through education and engagement.
Administrative Services and Records
Beyond emergency response, the police station provides essential administrative services to the public. Citizens can visit the station to obtain criminal record checks for employment or volunteer purposes. The department also manages an alarm system registry and facilitates the burinage (engraving) of valuables to prevent theft. The station serves as a safe exchange zone (Zone Neutre) for online transactions or child custody transfers, providing a monitored environment to ensure safety.
Jurisdiction and Collaboration
As a Level 2 police service, the Service de police de Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu has the autonomy to investigate a wide range of major crimes. For extremely serious incidents, such as homicides, the department works in collaboration with the Sûreté du Québec. The force plays a pivotal role in regional security, participating in joint task forces and maintaining a close working relationship with neighboring municipal services and the nearby military college and garrison.
