Overview
Municipal Library and Cultural Hub of Brossard
History and Municipal Role
The Georgette-Lepage Library (Bibliothèque de Brossard Georgette-Lepage) acts as the primary public knowledge and cultural centre for the City of Brossard. Founded in 1976, the institution has grown from a small local collection into a major municipal facility. In 2008, it was renamed in honour of Georgette Lepage, who served as the mayor of Brossard from 1983 to 1990, recognizing her significant contributions to the city’s cultural development. As a municipal entity, the library operates under the jurisdiction of the Ville de Brossard and integrates closely with other city services, such as the bciti+ citizen portal. It serves as a key access point for government information, digital literacy, and community engagement, providing residents with resources that extend far beyond traditional book lending.
Services and Collections
The library offers a comprehensive range of services designed to meet the educational, recreational, and professional needs of the community.
- Collections and Lending: The library houses a vast collection of over 200,000 items, including books, magazines, DVDs, and video games. Unique lending collections also include musical instruments, board games, and recreational equipment.
- Digital and Technical Services: The Fab Lab is a dedicated creative space equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters, and other digital fabrication tools, fostering innovation and technical skills among patrons. Public computer stations and high-speed Wi-Fi are available throughout the building, ensuring digital inclusion for all citizens.
- Specialized Zones: The facility features distinct areas for different demographics, including Espace Jeunes (for children aged 0-12), Espace SODA (a dynamic zone for teenagers), and quiet study areas for students and researchers.
- Public Records and Genealogy: The library maintains a section dedicated to local history and genealogy, serving as a resource for public records research and historical documentation of the Montérégie region.
Access and Regulations
Access to the library is free for all visitors, though borrowing privileges are reserved for Brossard residents with a valid bciti+ card or non-residents who pay an annual fee. The institution enforces a code of conduct to ensure a welcoming environment.
