Overview
Administration of Provincial Offences
Jurisdiction and Case Types
- Highway Traffic Act: This court is the primary venue for adjudicating non-criminal traffic violations issued in Mississauga, such as speeding, distracted driving, and careless driving charges. It also handles matters related to vehicle insurance and licensing irregularities.
- Municipal Bylaws: The court enforces City of Mississauga bylaws, including noise complaints, zoning infractions, animal control issues, and business licensing violations. It ensures community standards are maintained through the legal process.
- Other Statutes: Beyond traffic, the court hears cases under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, the Building Code Act, and the Trespass to Property Act, dealing with regulatory offences rather than criminal code violations.
Court Operations and Services
- Fine Payments: The administration office accepts payments for fines issued via tickets and summons. Residents can pay in person, though online options are also available. Failure to pay can lead to driver’s license suspension or additional collection fees.
- Early Resolution: Defendants wishing to resolve their tickets without a full trial can request an Early Resolution meeting. This allows them to meet with a prosecutor to discuss a potential plea deal or withdrawal of charges before appearing before a Justice of the Peace.
- Accessibility and Support: The facility provides interpreter services for trial hearings if requested in advance. The building is fully accessible, ensuring that all defendants and witnesses can participate in the judicial process regardless of physical ability.
