Overview
Federal Service Delivery Hub
Specialized Passport Operations
The Halifax Service Canada Centre, located within the modern Nova Centre complex on Argyle Street, is the primary federal service point for the Halifax Regional Municipality. Unlike standard Service Canada locations, this office operates as a specialized Passport Office, capable of providing urgent and express passport pickup services (within 10 business days or less) for citizens with immediate travel needs. Historically, passport services were located elsewhere in downtown Halifax before consolidating into this state-of-the-art facility to improve accessibility and security. The office handles the full spectrum of identity adjudication, acting as the critical checkpoint for verifying citizenship evidence and issuing secure travel documents under the authority of the Canadian Passport Order.
Integrated Government Programs
Beyond passports, this centre serves as a comprehensive access point for Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) programs. Staff are equipped to assist with:
- Social Insurance Numbers (SIN): Immediate issuance for new arrivals and temporary workers.
- Biometrics Collection: Fingerprinting and photo capture for visa and permit applicants.
- Benefit Advocacy: Guidance on Employment Insurance (EI), Canada Pension Plan (CPP), and Old Age Security (OAS) claims.
The centre utilizes the ‘eServiceCanada’ system, strongly encouraging clients to book appointments online to minimize wait times. While walk-ins are accepted, the high volume of passport seekers often results in significant queues. Security measures are strict, requiring screening similar to airport protocols before entry.
