Overview
Registry of Joint Stock Companies
The Registry of Joint Stock Companies (RJSC) is a critical division of Service Nova Scotia, located within the Maritime Centre on Barrington Street. It acts as the official provincial registrar for all business activity in Nova Scotia. Whether you are a sole proprietor, a partnership, or a large corporation, this is the authority responsible for granting legal status to your business entity 🏢. The registry maintains a massive public database of over 100,000 active businesses, ensuring transparency and legal compliance in the provincial marketplace.
Core Registration Services
The RJSC manages the lifecycle of business documentation from birth to dissolution:
- Business Registration: Processing applications for new incorporations, registering business names (operating as), and issuing Certificates of Incorporation.
- Annual Renewals: Ensuring businesses remain in ‘good standing’ by collecting annual fees and filings. Failure to renew can leads to revocation of a company’s legal status.
- Corporate Changes: Recording amendments such as name changes, director updates, and amalgamations.
- Public Search: Providing access to the ‘RJSC Online’ database where the public can verify a company’s existence, directors, and registered office address 🔍.
Modernization and Service Delivery
While the RJSC headquarters is in the Maritime Centre, the government has aggressively shifted towards digital service delivery. Most transactions, including name reservations and annual renewals, are now conducted via the Nova Scotia Online Service for Business portal. For complex filings that require manual review (such as amalgamations or paper-based incorporations), documents can be dropped off at the secure drop box in the lobby of the Maritime Centre or mailed. Note: Traditional counter service for walk-ins is limited compared to general Access Nova Scotia centres, as the focus here is on back-end processing and legal verification.
