Overview
Military Police Unit Halifax
Military Police Unit (MPU) Halifax is a specialized law enforcement agency located within the Windsor Park support site of CFB Halifax. As part of the Naval Military Police Group, this unit is responsible for policing the Department of National Defence (DND) establishments in the Halifax region. Their jurisdiction is unique, covering both the enforcement of the Criminal Code of Canada and the Code of Service Discipline under the National Defence Act. The unit ensures the safety and security of thousands of military personnel, civilian employees, and families living in Residential Housing Units (RHUs).
Mandate and Independence
- Law Enforcement: MPs conduct patrols, traffic enforcement, and criminal investigations on defence property, functioning similarly to civilian police but with additional military specific authorities.
- Independence: While part of the Canadian Armed Forces, Military Police exercise their policing duties independently of the chain of command to ensure impartiality and the rule of law.
- Community Policing: The unit engages deeply with the military community, handling domestic disputes, youth issues, and community safety programs within the housing areas.
Access and Jurisdiction
The detachment on Watch Dog Road operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It serves as the primary point of contact for emergencies on base. It is important to note that while they work closely with the Halifax Regional Police, MPU Halifax has primary jurisdiction over military lands. Civilians requiring police assistance outside of DND property should contact HRP. Access to the facility is generally restricted to military personnel and those with official business, though they do assist the public in matters involving military vehicles or property.
