Overview
The Center of Nova Scotia’s Judiciary
Supreme Court and Court of Appeal
The Law Courts building on Upper Water Street is the primary judicial complex for the province, housing the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia (Halifax Justice Centre). As the highest court in the province, the Court of Appeal hears appeals from the Supreme Court, Provincial Court, and various tribunals. The Supreme Court located here handles serious criminal matters, including jury trials for indictable offenses, as well as complex civil litigation, bankruptcy, and probate matters.
Building and Operations
Situated on the Halifax waterfront near the Historic Properties, this brutalist-style structure is a key landmark. It is strictly a place for serious legal proceedings and does not handle family law matters, which are diverted to the Devonshire Avenue location. The facility includes the Probate Court for estate administration and the Bankruptcy Court. Visitors should note that the court operates with high-level security protocols similar to airport screening.
Public Services
The Law Courts host a Free Legal Clinic on select days (typically Thursdays) where self-represented litigants can receive summary advice on civil appeals and Supreme Court matters. While the building is open to the public, access to courtrooms may be restricted during sensitive proceedings. The Sheriff Services division ensures the safety of all participants and maintains order within the facility.
Important Access Information
Historically, the building had an attached parkade, but it has been closed indefinitely for structural repairs. Visitors must utilize nearby paid public parking lots or street parking. The location is highly accessible via public transit, being adjacent to the Scotia Square transit hub and the ferry terminal.
