St. Andrew’s Community Centre Overview
The St. Andrew’s Community Centre is a premier municipal recreation facility located in the West End of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Operated by the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) Parks and Recreation Department, this modern centre serves as a vital community hub for residents of the Ashburn, West End, and Fairview-Clayton Park areas. The facility is designed to foster social connection, physical wellness, and creative expression through a wide array of programs and amenities. As a government-operated institution, it adheres to the municipality’s mandate to provide accessible, inclusive, and affordable leisure opportunities for citizens of all ages and abilities.
History and Redevelopment
The site of the St. Andrew’s Community Centre holds significant historical value for the neighborhood. The original facility was housed in the former St. Andrew’s School, which was repurposed for recreational use in 1983. Over time, the aging infrastructure became insufficient to meet the evolving needs of the growing population. Recognizing the importance of this location, the Halifax Regional Council approved a major capital project to demolish the old structure and construct a purpose-built facility.
The new St. Andrew’s Community Centre officially opened its doors in early 2020. Designed by the architectural firm Architecture49, the building was conceived as a ‘home away from home’ for the community. The design process involved extensive public consultation to ensure the space would reflect the diversity and aspirations of local residents. The project targeted LEED Silver certification, incorporating sustainable features such as energy-efficient mechanical systems, optimized solar exposure, and the use of durable, low-maintenance materials.
Architecture and Facilities
The 32,000-square-foot facility is organized around a central corridor known as ‘Main Street,’ which serves as an informal gathering space and connects the various program areas. Key features of the centre include:
- Double Gymnasium: An 8,400-square-foot gymnasium that can be divided into smaller sections. It hosts sports leagues, drop-in basketball, badminton, pickleball, and large community events.
- Art and Pottery Studio: A specialized creative space equipped with pottery wheels and kilns, offering classes for both beginners and experienced artisans.
- Community Kitchen: A fully equipped kitchen designed to support food literacy programs, cooking classes, and large-scale community dinners. It opens onto an outdoor patio, facilitating indoor-outdoor events.
- Indoor Playground: A dedicated 741-square-foot play structure for young children, providing a safe and climate-controlled environment for physical activity year-round.
- Multi-Purpose Rooms: Flexible meeting spaces and a dance studio used for fitness classes, yoga, community meetings, and private rentals.
Emergency Services
Beyond its recreational role, St. Andrew’s Community Centre serves as a designated Emergency Comfort Centre for the Halifax Regional Municipality. Equipped with a backup generator, the facility provides essential services such as charging stations, food, and warmth to residents during extended power outages or extreme weather events, reinforcing its status as a pillar of community resilience.
Programs and Registration
The centre offers hundreds of programs annually, ranging from preschool camps and youth leadership courses to seniors’ fitness and adult leisure classes. Registration for these programs is managed through the HRM’s centralized RECconnect system. Residents can register online using their client ID and family PIN, or by phone. The centre also supports the Affordable Access Program, which provides financial assistance to low-income residents to ensure that cost is not a barrier to participation.
Accessibility and Inclusion
In alignment with the Nova Scotia Accessibility Act, the new facility was built with inclusion as a priority. Features include barrier-free entrances, elevators, accessible washrooms and change rooms, and adaptive equipment in the gymnasium. The centre maintains a scent-aware and smoke-free policy to protect the health of all visitors.
