Overview
Office of the Mayor – Halifax Regional Municipality
The Office of the Mayor is the executive heart of the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), located within the historic Halifax City Hall on Argyle Street. This office supports the current Mayor, Andy Fillmore, who was elected in October 2024 to lead the region’s council. As the head of local government, the Mayor presides over Regional Council meetings, represents Halifax on the national and international stage, and sets the strategic direction for the municipality’s growth and development.
Role and Responsibilities
The Mayor’s Office is responsible for a broad range of civic duties, distinct from the administrative functions of city staff. Key responsibilities include:
- Council Leadership: Chairing the bi-weekly Regional Council meetings held in the Council Chamber, where bylaws and budgets are debated and approved.
- Strategic Priorities: Advancing key initiatives such as affordable housing strategies, the Integrated Mobility Plan (transit and cycling), and climate action goals (HalifACT).
- Public Engagement: The Mayor regularly meets with community groups, business leaders, and residents to hear concerns and celebrate civic milestones.
- Intergovernmental Relations: Advocating for Halifax’s interests with the Provincial Government of Nova Scotia and the Federal Government in Ottawa.
Visiting City Hall
Built between 1887 and 1890, Halifax City Hall is a National Historic Site located at the north end of the Grand Parade. While the Mayor’s private office is located on the upper floor and is generally by appointment only, the building itself is open to the public. Residents can attend Council meetings, which are open to the public, or visit the main reception for general inquiries. Please note that property tax payments and permit applications are not processed at the Mayor’s Office; these should be directed to the Customer Service Centres (e.g., Duke Street or Bayers Road).
Contact and Protocol
Residents wishing to invite the Mayor to an event or request a meeting should submit a formal request through the municipal website. Due to the high volume of correspondence, scheduling is managed by the Mayor’s executive staff. For congratulatory certificates (birthdays, anniversaries), requests should be made several weeks in advance.
