VPD Property Office Overview
The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) Property Office is a specialized facility located at 2010 Glen Drive, separate from the main police headquarters. This department is responsible for the secure intake, storage, and disposition of all property seized by police or turned in by the public. This includes evidence for criminal cases, safekeeping items for prisoners, and general lost and found items. The office operates under strict legal and procedural guidelines to ensure the chain of custody is maintained for all evidentiary materials. It serves as the central repository for thousands of items annually, ranging from recovered bicycles to forensic exhibits. While the front counter is accessible to the public for specific services, the facility is primarily a secure storage warehouse.
Lost and Found Services
One of the primary public-facing functions of this office is managing the city’s lost and found. If a member of the public finds an item of value (such as a wallet, phone, or bicycle), they are encouraged to drop it off here.
Claiming Items: If you have lost an item, you can contact the Property Office to check if it has been turned in. For lost bicycles, it is recommended to have your serial number available. Items are generally held for 90 days. If the lawful owner is not identified within that timeframe, the finder may in some cases claim the item, subject to specific restrictions (e.g., no prohibited weapons or data-bearing devices).
Auctions: Unclaimed items that are not returned to finders are eventually auctioned off. The VPD does not sell items directly to the public at this location; instead, they utilize external auction services (such as Able Auctions) to dispose of goods publicly.
Evidence and Safekeeping
For individuals involved in police investigations, this office manages the return of seized property once it is no longer required for court proceedings. Returns are strictly controlled.
Appointment System: Retrieving evidence or safekeeping items often requires an appointment to ensure the property is ready for release and the authorizing officer has cleared it. It is highly advisable to call ahead rather than arriving unannounced for evidence pickup.
Identification: Valid government-issued photo identification is mandatory for all property releases. No property will be released without proper verification of ownership and identity.
Location and Transit
The Property Office is located in the False Creek Flats area, near VCC-Clark Station. The building is distinct from the Cambie Street headquarters.
Accessibility: The facility has a public service counter. Visitors should be prepared for security screening upon entry. The location is well-served by public transit, being a short walk from the VCC-Clark Skytrain Station (Millennium Line) and major bus routes along Great Northern Way and Clark Drive.
