Overview
Native Courtworker and Counselling Association of BC
The Native Courtworker and Counselling Association of British Columbia (NCCABC) provides culturally appropriate justice and health-related services to Indigenous people involved in the criminal justice system. Located within the Vancouver Provincial Court building, this office serves as a critical bridge between Indigenous accused persons and the Canadian legal system.
Courtworker Services
Native Courtworkers act as navigators for Indigenous individuals appearing in court. Their primary functions include:
- Legal Navigation: Explaining court procedures, charges, and rights to the accused in a culturally sensitive manner.
- Liaison Role: Facilitating communication between the accused, defense counsel, Crown counsel, and the judiciary.
- Referrals: Connecting clients with legal aid, community resources, and treatment programs.
Support and Advocacy
In addition to court support, the NCCABC provides counselling and advocacy to address the underlying causes of conflict with the law. The association is committed to reducing the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the justice system by promoting restorative justice practices and ensuring that the unique circumstances of Indigenous offenders, such as Gladue factors, are understood by the court.
