Overview
Red Deer Youth Justice Committee
The Red Deer Youth Justice Committee (RDYJC) operates as a community-based alternative to the formal court system for young offenders, situated within the Red Deer Provincial Building. Functioning under the authority of the Youth Criminal Justice Act and in partnership with Alberta Justice, the committee focuses on restorative justice principles to hold youth accountable while providing them with the support needed to reintegrate into the community.
Restorative Justice & Diversion
The committee administers the Extra-Judicial Sanctions Program, dealing with youth aged 12 to 17 who have committed non-violent or less serious offences. Instead of a criminal record, eligible youth participate in community-driven resolutions.
- Community Panels: Volunteers meet with the youth, their guardians, and victims to discuss the offence and its impact.
- Sanctions Agreement: Developing a binding agreement that may include community service, restitution, or apology letters.
- Victim Support: Providing a platform for victims to voice their concerns and participate in the resolution process.
- Mentorship: Guiding youth towards positive behavioral changes and connecting them with community resources.
Location & Access
The office is located on the first floor of the Provincial Building in downtown Red Deer. Access is typically by appointment or referral from the Crown Prosecutor or Police. As this is a government facility, visitors must pass through security screening upon entry.
