Profile
Tireless Advocacy for Injured Workers in East Toronto
For over 50 years, Injured Workers’ Consultants (IWC) has been a pillar of support for the working community in Toronto. Operating as a non-profit community legal clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario, this organization is dedicated to protecting the rights of workers who have been injured on the job. Since its founding in 1969, IWC has evolved from a grassroots group of volunteers into a specialized legal clinic that provides free legal services to those who cannot afford private counsel. Unlike traditional law firms, IWC focuses exclusively on workers’ compensation law, making them uniquely qualified to navigate the complex bureaucratic maze of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB). Their team of legal workers and community advocates operates on a collective model, ensuring that every client receives compassionate, non-judgmental support.
Specialized WSIB and Disability Representation
The core mission of Injured Workers’ Consultants is to help injured workers secure the benefits they are legally entitled to. As Workers’ Compensation (WCB) Lawyers and licensed paralegals, they represent clients at all levels of the claims process, from initial entitlement to complex appeals before the Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal (WSIAT). They also assist with Canada Pension Plan (CPP) disability appeals, recognizing that workplace injuries often lead to long-term disability. If you need to find a lawyer to help you fight a denied claim or reduced benefits, IWC offers expert representation without the financial burden of legal fees. They are also deeply involved in law reform and community organizing, working to change the system to better serve all injured workers.
- WSIB Appeals: Representation at mediation and tribunal hearings to dispute benefit denials.
- CPP Disability: Assisting workers with federal disability pension applications and appeals.
- Public Legal Education: conducting workshops to inform workers of their rights under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act.
- Law Reform: Advocating for systemic changes to improve the workers’ compensation system in Ontario.
A Community-Centred Approach
IWC is more than just a legal clinic; it is a hub for community empowerment. They work closely with injured worker support groups, such as the Bright Lights group, to combat the isolation that often accompanies a workplace injury. The clinic is located at 815 Danforth Avenue, in a vibrant and accessible part of the city. Their services are available to low-income injured workers, and they strive to be linguistically accessible, offering services in English and French. If you urgently need a lawyer but are worried about the cost, Injured Workers’ Consultants provides a vital safety net. Their long history of advocacy has resulted in significant legal precedents that have benefited thousands of workers across the province.
We believe that injured workers deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Our goal is not just to win individual cases, but to empower workers to stand up for their rights and build a fairer system for everyone.
