Profile
Free Legal Support for Discrimination
The Human Rights Legal Support Centre (HRLSC) is an independent agency funded by the Government of Ontario, dedicated to protecting the human rights of people across the province. The Centre provides free legal services to individuals who have experienced discrimination or harassment contrary to the Ontario Human Rights Code. With a team of lawyers, paralegals, and human rights advisors, the HRLSC ensures that everyone has equal access to justice, regardless of their financial situation.
Services Provided
The HRLSC offers a range of services to help Ontarians navigate the human rights system:
- Legal Advice: Providing guidance on whether your situation is covered by the Human Rights Code.
- Legal Representation: Assisting eligible individuals with filing applications to the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario (HRTO) and representing them at mediations and hearings.
- Early Resolution: helping parties reach a settlement before going to a hearing.
- Enforcement: assisting clients in enforcing orders and settlements made by the Tribunal.
- Public Education: Informing communities about their rights and responsibilities under the Code.
Access to Justice
As a government-funded organization, the HRLSC provides its services at no cost to the user. This is a vital resource for those who cannot afford to hire a lawyer but need protection from discrimination in employment, housing, or services. The Centre focuses on empowering marginalized communities and advancing equality rights throughout Ontario.
Downtown Toronto Office
The HRLSC’s main office is located on Dundas Street West, near University Avenue. While they have a physical presence, much of their intake and advice is conducted over the phone to serve people across the entire province effectively.
