Profile
Access to Justice for All
The Niagara Community Legal Clinic is a non-profit community legal clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario, dedicated to providing free legal services to low-income residents of the Niagara Region. Located in downtown St. Catharines, we believe that financial status should never be a barrier to justice. Our team of committed lawyers, paralegals, and community legal workers provides representation, advice, and advocacy to those who are most vulnerable. We focus on areas of law that impact the basic necessities of life, such as housing, income maintenance, and employment. Beyond individual representation, we are actively involved in community development and law reform initiatives aimed at addressing the systemic causes of poverty and injustice.
Housing and Tenant Rights
Secure housing is a fundamental human right. We provide robust support to tenants facing precarious housing situations. Our services include:
- Eviction Prevention: Representing tenants at the Landlord and Tenant Board to fight unlawful evictions and ensure due process.
- Maintenance and Repairs: Advising tenants on their rights when landlords fail to maintain safe and habitable living conditions.
- Tenant Rights Education: Empowering the community with knowledge about the Residential Tenancies Act to prevent disputes before they escalate.
Income Security and Disability Support
Navigating the complex bureaucratic systems of government benefits can be overwhelming. We assist clients in securing the financial support they are entitled to, including:
- ODSP and Ontario Works: We help with applications and represent clients in appeals before the Social Benefits Tribunal when benefits are denied, cancelled, or reduced.
- CPP Disability: Assisting with appeals for Canada Pension Plan Disability benefits for those unable to work due to severe and prolonged disabilities.
- Employment Law: Advising workers on their rights regarding unpaid wages, wrongful dismissal, and Employment Standards Act violations.
Community-Centered Legal Services
We are more than just a law office; we are a community resource. We offer public legal education workshops and work collaboratively with other social service agencies to ensure our clients receive holistic support. If you are struggling with a legal issue and cannot afford a private lawyer, we encourage you to find a legal clinic that can help. Our services are free of charge for those who meet our financial eligibility guidelines. Contact us to see if you qualify for assistance. We are here to listen, to advise, and to fight for your dignity and rights.
