Profile
Over 50 Years of Community Justice
Established in 1970, Dalhousie Legal Aid Service is the oldest clinical law program in Canada and a vital institution in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Operated by the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University, this clinic serves a dual purpose: providing high-quality legal representation to low-income individuals who would otherwise be unable to afford a lawyer, and offering practical, hands-on training for third-year law students. It is a place where education meets social justice, creating a powerful resource for the community.
Championing Tenants’ Rights
Dalhousie Legal Aid is widely recognized for its aggressive advocacy in housing law. They are the creators of the well-known Tenants’ Rights Guide, a definitive resource for renters in Nova Scotia. The clinic specializes in representing tenants in disputes with landlords, fighting against wrongful evictions, and ensuring safe living conditions. If you are facing a housing crisis, their team can help you understand the Residential Tenancies Act and stand your ground.
- Family and Child Protection: Representing parents and guardians in complex proceedings involving the Department of Community Services.
- Youth Criminal Defence: acting as counsel for young persons in Youth Court, ensuring their rights are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
- Poverty Law: Advocating for clients in matters related to Income Assistance appeals and other social support systems.
- Community Outreach: Engaging in law reform and public legal education to address systemic issues affecting marginalized populations.
A Voice for the Vulnerable
The clinic accepts cases based on financial need and the educational value for students. Cases are handled by law students under the strict supervision of experienced staff lawyers. This unique model ensures that every file receives thorough attention and enthusiastic advocacy. Located in the Halifax Professional Centre on Spring Garden Road, the clinic is a hub for social action and legal support.
If you need to find a lawyer who understands the challenges of poverty and inequality, Dalhousie Legal Aid Service offers a compassionate and determined option. Please note that they have specific income guidelines for eligibility.
